Our club has demonstrated its ability to serve the community in a variety of ways. From the club’s inaugural year in 2006, The Rotary Club of Cherokee County committed itself to serving the youth of Cherokee County. At first it was as “Rocking Readers” where Rotarians read to students at Canton’s Hasty Elementary School. This activity grew into an annual “Books To Home” Program that provided whole grade levels with several grade appropriate paperbacks and Spanish/English Dictionaries for building an “at home” personal library for the students.
Back at Hasty Elementary School, RCCC Rotarians helped Master Gardeners by spreading mulch for the school’s garden project.
The Club also addresses the serious problem of drug abuse in Cherokee County by delivering an anti-drug message to middle schools through its “Don’t Meth With Us” program.
The Cherokee Outdoor YMCA also benefitted from our club’s energy as it repaired YMCA dock on Lake Alatoona, were joined by family members to paint fencing, and upgraded the outdoor playfield.
The Club is also part of Adopt-A-Highway and does quarterly trash pickups along Highway 20 in Canton.
Each week three club members alternate delivering leftover bread from Woodstock Townelake Publix to MUST Ministries in Canton.
Club members support The Salvation Army each year by volunteering to “ring the bell” during the holiday season Salvation Army Kettle Drive at Canton’s WalMart.
Rotary Club of Cherokee County is one of the contributors to building and staffing the annual Christmas “Lights of Hope” display at Woodstock’s Hobgood Park.
Besides working on service projects, our club sponsors two major fundraising events to help support these and other Rotary service projects. The Rotary Club of Cherokee County Vidalia Onion Sale has become a much anticipated event in Woodstock. We sell over 700 bags of farm fresh Vidalia onions, which sometimes present humorous storage challenges. The community welcomes the fresh Vidalias, and it enthusiastically participates in the club’s annual “Rotary Club of Cherokee County Turkey Shoot”.
These are a sample of programs which Rotary Club of Cherokee County Rotarians perform in Cherokee County defining the club’s local service mission and its commitment to the Rotary Motto: “Service Above Self.” While a small club by comparison with others in the county and Rotary District, The Rotary Club of Cherokee County is one of the most energetic and community service based clubs. Members choose how and when they can best serve the community through Club activities — the record demonstrates their success.
